A nice shoujo to get into when you're new is Fruits basket, a fun story about members of family who, if hugged by the opposite sex, turn into an animal of the zodiac. that's the first anime I really got into, for other easy going shoujo's there's: Kare first love, Imadoki. for slice of life kind of stuff there's Usagi(bunny) drop, which is about a little girl called Rin who is the illegitimate daughter of Daikichi's grandfather, after the grandfather dies Diakichi takes her in. Very funny and sweet. Or there's Chi's sweet home, about a little kitten called chi and her view on life, ridiculously adorable. hope that helps. =] For horror I'd recomend Hellsing ultimate or HIgurashi no naku koro (this one i find a little scary XP)

I am totally with Flawless on this.
The Ghiblis are a brilliant way to get into anime as they'rejust such a joy to watch. You can also get them in dub which you can't always do for a lot of anime sand I think subs puts a lot of people off.
I would also recommend Fruits Basket just because a) it's only one series, b) if people like it there is the longer manga they can read and c) everyone knows Fruits Basket - it's a good break into the anime world if you start with something a lot of people in that world are familiar with.
I also find that a good way of getting friends and things into anime is to remind them of how much they've already seen. I don't think there's anyone in the world who hasn't heard of Pokemon. And loads of people grew up with BeyBlade and Sailor Moon.
Dragonball Z was my thing. I was addicted to it as a kid and when I got into manga I decided to be really sad and look it all up again. As such I have now seen all 276 (? i think) eps in a row. ((I was recovering from an op and had a lot of time on my hands and a drug induced brain. Don't judge me. lol)), and that just really reaffirmed my love for it.

I knew what TTGL was right off the bat, but i'm used to the abbreviations :I
I'm typically more of a shoujo lover, and I don't actually bother with anime too much, I prefer reading manga. So my recommended anime are a little bit meh.
Kimi ni todoke, its shoujo, and moe and adorable and I reccomend it because the art is pretty good, and the storyline hooks you hopefully (hopefully said because everyone likes something different).

Mecha series: G Gundam (heard it is a good series, I have watch 11 episodes and good as it is a lot different to the other Gundam series), Full Metal Panic (very funny in parts but only watch 4 episodes) and Mazinger (one of the first mecha series I have watched).
Full Metal Panic I think is the most enjoyable also there are a lot of series of it (a good one for people that don't know much about mecha).
G Gundam is funny as well and nice to see a different look at Mecha.

Now watching Full Metal Alchemist and I reckon this is a good one for beginners - the dub is awesome and the relationship between Ed and Al really hooks you - it's also really funny and has depth to it's humour.
