"You have to, Zero!" Big, round garnet eyes peered up at him while small delicate hands were clenched in tight fists at the girl's side.
"No, Yuuki!" Turning his back on the girl he had always considered as his sister and best friend, Zero continued on his way to college car park, various books and folders tucked under one arm.
"But…"
Stopping mid-step Zero swung round to face his friend. "Either you shut up now and cease with all this stupid talk or you walk home." Sending a pointed glare in her direction he continued towards his car.
To many it may have been a clapped-out old Ford Fiesta, older that the silver haired youth himself, but to Zero it was so much more than that. As soon as he had been old enough to start working part-time around school, he had taken any job he could get so that he could save to buy his first car. It had taken him two years to save enough to afford the old car before him, not to mention the insurance which had been astronomical. What was it with insurance companies and thinking that all 17-year olds were boy racers? Taking his place behind the wheel he waited for his idiotic sister to join him so that he could give her a ride home.
"Zero?" Not to be deterred by the brush off she received moments before, the young brunette was determined to get her say.
Knowing what was coming, however, Zero quickly reached for the stereo, turning it on and cranking up the volume before turning to Yuuki and shouting, "Sorry, can't hear you!" With a smirk he reversed out of the parking space and started the journey home.
With a huff, Yuuki fastened her seatbelt and slid down in the chair, turning to stare out the window. She really hated it when Zero was being stubborn. She was going to have to come up with another way to get what she wanted.
Although Zero Kiryuu referred to Yuuki as his 'sister' and she referred to him as her 'brother', they weren't related in any way by blood. They'd both grown up under the watchful and sometimes overbearingly loving care of a man called Kaien Cross. Raised together for the last four years they had become very close.
Yuuki was probably the only person that Zero truly trusted in his life, so much so that at the beginning of the year he had trusted her with the deepest and darkest of all his secrets. The fact that Yuuki had merely blinked once, hugged him and carried on as normal showed just how deeply their bond had become.
It was about the same time that Kaien Cross was contacted by a solicitor claiming that his client, a 17-year old brunette boy by the name of Kaname Kuran was in fact Yuuki's older brother and only living relative.
It had come as a shock to the three of them as they had been under the impression that Yuuki had no family left and that her brother had died along with her parents in that terrible house fire nine years previous. Once over the initial shock of the news Yuuki had been very keen to meet her 'real' brother again after so long.
Needless to say, the initial awkwardness of the first meeting aside, Yuuki and Kaname had got along well and were starting to form they own familial bonds. So much so that last month, the beginning of May, she had moved to live with her brother in his (very spacious) apartment on the other side of town.
Zero hadn't been happy with turn of events. His most trusted, and if he was realistic only, friend had been taken away from him. At least, that's how he saw it. He didn't like Kaname Kuran, but for Yuuki's sake he put on a mask and pretended everything was ok. Kaname was the same age as Zero and had started to attend the same college, and as luck would have it they were sharing many of the same classes.
It was now nearing the end of his first year at college and once the next year was complete and his A-level exams were finished with his was leaving for a university far away from that annoying Kuran bastard.
So consumed in thought that he nearly missed the turn for the street Yuuki and Kaname lived on he took the left turn rather sharply before pulling up in front of the apartment building and turned the music down a notch or two. Without turning to face her, Zero waited for Yuuki to get out of the car so he could get home and relax.
"See you tomorrow, Zero?" Her hand paused on the door handle, she paused before exiting, awaiting her friends response.
"Yeah," Bracing himself Zero turned to face her, giving her his best effort at a smile at that moment. "Tell Kuran 'Hello' from me."
"Oh, Zero!" She swatted his arm playfully. "We both know you don't mean that."
His smile dropped and transformed into a frown. "But…" A warm hand wrapped around his where it rested on the gear stick, causing him to look up into her eyes.
"It's really sweet of you, you know." Inside she giggled at the pout that formed on his lips, he hated being called sweet or cute.
"Pretending to like him for 'my sake'."
"I don't…" Again his protest was stopped before he could get started.
"Yes you do and you know it." She scolded him good naturedly.
"You don't have to do it for my sake, Zero. You are still my 'little big' brother and you will always be very important to me and I will always love you. Please don't worry for me; Kaname looks after me well. After all, he's my brother too."
Pulling the silver haired young man into a brief tight hug she then grabbed her bag and bounded out of the car and up the steps to the apartment building, soon vanishing from sight.
Suddenly feeling more depressed than he had all day at the mention of Yuuki's 'real' brother, Zero put the car into gear and pulled out into the steady flow of traffic heading across town. He was going to need to release his frustrations on something that night and only hoped no one was visiting Cross. He really wasn't in the mood for being on his 'best behaviour'.
As he continued the drive to the house he shared with Kaien Cross, Zero let his thoughts wander to the first time he met that arrogant bastard, Kaname Kuran.
Let me know what you think, not sure if I should continue. I welcome all feedback and corrections on spelling/grammar I may have missed. Also if they shouldn't be posted here please let me know and I'll move it.
Thanks!
